The Client
The Royal College of Nursing is the UK’s largest professional nursing union, representing over 500,000 nursing staff across the country. The RCN campaigns on behalf of nurses and nursing, promotes excellence in practice and shapes health policies that affect the profession and the patients it serves.
The Brief
The RCN came to Nutmeg Productions with a deceptively simple brief: create a campaign film that would allow the public to say thank you to the nurses who had made a difference to their lives. The film needed to capture the emotional depth of that relationship, the profound gratitude patients feel for the people who cared for them at their most vulnerable, while also serving as a powerful piece of public advocacy for the nursing profession.
It needed to work across digital and social platforms, reach a broad public audience, and be capable of going viral. In short, it needed to move people.
Our Approach
We built the film around real stories, real patients, real nurses, real moments of connection and gratitude. Rather than scripted testimonials, we created conditions in which genuine emotion could be captured on camera: the words that are hard to say but mean everything.
Our production team has deep experience working with vulnerable participants and clinical environments, and that experience shaped every decision we made, from how we approached contributors before the camera rolled, to how we edited it to feel like a great big hug on screen.
The Result
The RCN Thank a Nurse film reached 1.6 million views within 72 hours of release, making it one of the most-watched nursing campaign films in UK charity film history. It generated widespread national media coverage and became a landmark piece of public advocacy for the nursing profession at a moment when that advocacy had never been more important.
The film remains one of Nutmeg Productions’ most celebrated commissions and a defining example of what charity film production can achieve when creative craft meets a cause people genuinely care about.
