The Client
Age UK is the UK’s leading charity for older people, providing information, friendship and support to millions of people aged 65 and over. The charity campaigns on issues including loneliness and social isolation, a crisis affecting more than 1.4 million older people in the UK, with profound consequences for physical and mental health.
The Brief
Age UK commissioned Nutmeg Productions to create a campaign film addressing loneliness among older people, one of the charity’s most important and long-running advocacy priorities. The film needed to make the invisible visible: to bring audiences face to face with the reality of isolation in later life in a way that moved them to act, donate or engage with the campaign.
Our Approach
Loneliness is a subject that resists easy representation. It is, by definition, an absence, of connection, of company, of the small interactions that make up a life. Our challenge was to make that absence tangible and emotionally real on screen.
We worked with Arthur London and Age UK to identify contributors whose stories could carry the weight of the film, older people willing to share their experience of isolation with honesty and courage. Our production team, which has worked extensively with older people on camera over twenty years, knows how to create the conditions for that kind of openness: patience, warmth, genuine interest and a complete absence of the pressure to perform.
The resulting film is quiet, observational and deeply human. It doesn’t tell audiences how to feel. It shows them something true and trusts them to respond.
The Result
The Age UK loneliness campaign film was deployed across digital platforms and campaign communications, helping the charity raise awareness of isolation in later life and driving engagement with their wider campaign activity. It was so successful that we were asked to turn it into a DRTV for use later in the year, proving that a story told well connects with its audience.
It forms part of Nutmeg’s extensive body of work for Age UK, a long-standing client relationship spanning multiple productions including Christmas campaign films for social and broadcast television.
