The Client

Shelter is one of the UK’s most prominent housing and homelessness charities, providing advice, support and legal services to people facing the housing crisis, and campaigning for lasting change to housing policy. More than 300,000 people are homeless in Britain today. Shelter’s communications work is designed to make that reality impossible to ignore.

The Brief

Shelter commissioned Nutmeg Productions to create a film that would bring the human reality of homelessness to public audiences, something that moved people to empathy, to action, to understanding that homelessness is not an abstract social problem but something that can happen to anyone. The answer was a scripted, narrative-led awareness film: a crafted story rooted in the truth of the housing crisis, performed on location to give it the texture and emotional weight of lived experience.

Our Approach

Creating a scripted awareness film about homelessness carries real responsibility. The story needed to feel authentic, grounded in the real patterns of how people fall into housing crisis, without putting vulnerable individuals in front of a camera. A carefully written script, developed with sensitivity to the subject matter, allowed us to tell a story that is emotionally true even when it is not drawn from a single person’s testimony.

Filming on location in London added the visual honesty the subject demands. Real environments, the kind of spaces where housing insecurity plays out, gave the film an atmosphere and credibility that a studio setting simply couldn’t provide.

Nutmeg Productions has been working with social issue subject matter for twenty years. That experience shapes everything: the way we develop a script with a charity partner, the locations we choose, the performances we draw out, and the editorial decisions we make in the cut.

The Result

The film has been used by Shelter as part of their awareness and campaign communications, contributing to the charity’s ongoing work to put the housing crisis at the top of the public agenda. It sits within a growing Nutmeg portfolio of homelessness and housing films. Work that reflects our long experience bringing social issues to life on screen with both rigour and compassion.
