The Client
Independent Age is a national charity providing support, information and connection for older people facing hardship, loneliness and isolation. The charity campaigns on issues including poverty in later life and offers free advice to older people, their families and carers across the UK.
The Brief
Independent Age commissioned Nutmeg Productions to create a documentary film exploring the reality of financial hardship in later life, as part of their #HiddenTwoMillion campaign. It’s a subject that affects hundreds of thousands of older people in the UK but remains largely hidden from public view. The film needed to give voice to people with lived experience of poverty in older age, treating them with dignity and respect while making their stories compelling enough to drive awareness, policy change and donor support.
The Films
Documentary filmmaking about vulnerable subjects demands a particular kind of care, and a particular kind of trust. Our team spent time building relationships with contributors before filming began, ensuring that the people at the heart of the story felt safe, respected and genuinely heard throughout the process.
The result is a film that feels honest and moving. We avoided the tropes of traditional charity fundraising films, the voiceover narration, the manipulative music, in favour of a quieter, more observational approach that lets the reality of people’s lives speak for itself. That choice is what makes the film work: the emotion is earned, not manufactured.
The Result
The film was nominated for a Smiley Award in 2024, the leading recognition for excellence in charity film production in the UK. It has been used by Independent Age as a centrepiece of their awareness and advocacy work, helping the charity communicate the scale and human reality of financial hardship in later life to media, policymakers and the public.
Nutmeg Productions is proud to have this film as part of our charity portfolio, and proud of every person who trusted us with their story.
