Maritime Rules

The Client

Lloyd’s Register Foundation is an independent global safety charity and the parent company of Lloyd’s Register, one of the world’s oldest and most respected maritime classification societies, founded in 1760. The Foundation invests in research, education and public engagement to improve safety and reduce risk in critical industries, with maritime safety at the heart of its heritage.

With an archive stretching back over 260 years – maps, documents, records and images documenting the history of global shipping and maritime regulation – the Foundation holds a unique body of primary historical material that few organisations anywhere in the world can match.

The Brief

Lloyd’s Register Foundation commissioned Nutmeg to create a series of films exploring the history of significant maritime safety regulations, examining the specific rules and standards that have, over the centuries, made the world’s seas safer for the people who work on them.

The films needed to be both historically rigorous and genuinely engaging for a wide audience. presenting complex regulatory history in a way that connected with viewers who might not have a background in maritime affairs, while remaining credible to those who do.

Our Approach

We developed a visual style for the series of 5 films built around the Lloyd’s Register archives themselves, using original stills, historical maps, documents and records as the primary visual language of each film. This was both an aesthetically distinctive choice and an editorially honest one: these films are about history, and history looks like documents and maps, not reconstructions.

Archive material was combined with stock footage and animation to bring each regulatory story to life across its full context, from the maritime disasters that prompted regulatory change through to the international processes by which new rules were agreed and implemented. The hybrid approach gave us the flexibility to cover each regulation’s story comprehensively without being limited by what the archive alone could show.

The Result

A film series for Lloyd’s Register Foundation that draws on one of the most significant maritime archives in the world to tell stories of global safety regulation in a format accessible to a broad audience, hosted on the Foundation’s website as part of their public engagement and educational mission.

The production demonstrates Nutmeg’s ability to work with organisations whose history and archives are central to their identity, treating primary materials with care while finding the editorial and visual approach that makes them compelling on screen.
